East Coast style pizza comes to Grande Prairie

A new Grande Prairie restaurant has rapidly become popular, thanks to one item that isn’t even on its menu.

Business was slow for the first four days after Lil Ava’s Pizza opened on May 26 on 100 Street, south of the Northgate Safeway. Then co-owner Rob Mackay decided to follow a suggestion to serve East Coast-style pizza, which uses donair meat and donair sauce instead of tomato sauce.

 

“We went from hundreds a day to thousands a day in sales in 24 hours,” Mackay said. “Dude, it killed me for two days just trying to keep up.”

It’s been four decades since a deadly tragedy unfolded in the skies above Grande Prairie.

On May 3, 1978, Capt. Gordon de Jong, 32, was flying as “opposing solo” in the Snowbirds aerobatic team in the Grande Prairie Air Show. In the midst of the performance, the tail fell off de Jong’s plane, sending him to his death as the jet spiralled out of control.

On Wednesday evening, Amos Wiebe was driving on a logging road near Grande Prairie, looking for owls to photograph. In the fading daylight, he noticed a commotion about 100 feet up in the trees. It was two lynx, apparently having a fight.

The Grande Prairie Fire Department responded in full force Friday night after a lightning strike set fire to a hotel under construction in the city’s west end.

Leigh Ward, a security guard, was near the end of his shift just before 11 p.m. inside the Podollan hotel construction project on 99th Avenue, just west of the CIBC bank, when he heard a loud bang.
